CAPP Vocational Training College (CAPP VTC) with assistance from the UNEVOC implemented a project on local chickens’ production and post-harvest handling interventions to mitigate the impact of covid-19 pandemic. Out of the six districts mentioned above, the training was conducted in Chiradzulu district. The Main objective of this training was to address challenges faced by farmers in local chicken production and postharvest handling. The project has trained 50 (fifty) farmers on high value cereal and horticulture crops and local chickens production in the areas of postharvest handling, processing and marketing of crops as well as production, disease management, and feeding in local chicken production. The project did a purposive focus group approach; smallholder horticulture farmers from the two Extension Planning Areas of Thumbwe and Mombezi in Chiradzulu district in the southern region of Malawi where the training took place. Postharvest handling is a stage in crop production immediately following harvest. The instant a crop is removed from the ground, or separated from its parent plant, it begins to deteriorate (postharvest loss). Postharvest handling therefore determines final quality of the product; food for consumption or for sale.
This training drew 50 participants from the two EPAs of Thumbwe and Mombezi in Chiradzulu district. Of the 50 participants, 30 were females while 20 were males. 4 CAPP VTC staff and 3 EPA staff have trained the participants in the skills mentioned above. The training lasted for 10 weeks from February to May 2021.
